We are at Spanglish Baby!

Did you see? We are writing, okay, MAMI is writing for Spanglish Baby! It's a site dedicated to bilingual families. This is perfect for us, because that IS us!

Check out her first post where we talk about watching PBS KIDS GO! Arthurspin-off series Postcards from Buster called “Vamos Buster” when he visits Chile!

I can't wait to go this summer, even though mami says it will be winter there. I really don't understand that, how does that work?

Anyway, that's still many days away. In the meantime, check out Buster!

Hey, a very late Trendy Toddler Tuesday Week 10

Hi everyone, so sorry about Trendy Toddler Tuesday. As you may have seen it's been a bit quiet here and at mami's blog just because we have lots going on and sometimes things happen and there isn't any time to sit at the computer.

If you did a Trendy Toddler Tuesday for this week, just tweet mami @verybusymama and she will share it on our Facebook page and RT it. That way we can stop by and see what you have been stylin'!

Also, we may do it once a month just so that we never forget again. What do you think?

Thanks for joining us - we promise to get our "acts together" as mami says. There have been too many changes in our lives and I think it has sort of caught up to us.

We love this blog and we will keep posting fun and interesting this, just bear with us, okay?

Thank you!

Trendy Toddler Tuesday: Week 9

Here's the truth: I need new clothes. My feet are growing very fast, my belly is getting bigger and my legs are getting longer. Mami can't keep up and not just that but we have to take it easy on "the shopping" papi said. Budget is the word he used.

So you see, I don't have a whole lot to show you because there isn't too much trendiness going on here. But last week Mami and I were at Old Navy where she did get me a new top, but we were in a rush so we will have to go back. They had lots of clothes for kids and at a really good price.

So until we go back, I have put together some pictures of the stuff I want her to get me....I really like the high tops and the yellow jacket!

We know there isn't an Old Navy in the UK, but we just have to tell you that they have great and affordable clothing for everyone in the family but especially for kids. You can't go wrong in there!

Hooded Striped Sweater
Dinosaur Graphic Tee
Cuffed Khakis
Canvas High Tops
Hooded Anorak
Little M - that's me!

Prices start at $6 - $12

What do you think about our choices? Oh and the pink shades are my own. It's been really sunny here lately and I need to make sure I keep the sun out of my face.

And now we want to see what you have been wearing, so please join in, link up and show us what you got!

New movie alert: The Secret World of Arrietty

This past weekend mami and papi left me with Oma and they spent the weekend in Georgetown. I should have known they were going to be gone a few days when I saw mami take a suitcase with her on Friday night. Sneaky mami!

Anyway, I found out later that mami and papi were invited to the advanced Washington, DC screening of the Disney movie The Secret World of Arrietty (AIR-ee-ett-ee) which is based on  Mary Norton's children's book series "The Borrowers." I wanted to go, but mami promised to take me another day.

The movie, which opens today the 17th of February in all the movie theaters across the United States is about really little people who live underneath the floor boards in their own secret world. Imagine that! I wonder if there are any in my house?

There are some very famous people doing the voices of the characters, including mami and papi's favorite actors Amy Poehler and Will Arnett!

Arrietty (voice of Bridgit Mendler), a tiny, but tenacious 14-year-old, lives with her parents (Arnett and Poehler) in the recesses of a suburban garden home, unbeknownst to the homeowner and her housekeeper (voice of Carol Burnett).

Like all little people, Arrietty remains hidden from view, except during occasional covert ventures beyond the floorboards to “borrow” scrap supplies like sugar cubes from her human hosts.

But when 12-year-old Shawn (voice of David Henrie), a human boy who comes to stay in the home, discovers his mysterious housemate one evening, a secret friendship blossoms. If discovered, their relationship could drive Arrietty’s family from the home and straight into danger. The English language version of “The Secret World of Arrietty” was executive produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall, and directed by Gary Rydstrom.

Sound good right? Well, it is!

Mami and papi really enjoyed it and said it was even better than they expected! What they most liked is knowing the actors doing the voices because that made it more fun to watch. Everyone can go see this film because it is rated G and only 95 minutes long.

So if you are looking for a good family movie, this is for you. Make sure to check your local listings first.

Enjoy!

*Tickets were provided for the screening of this film*

Watching planes take off from Reagan National Airport

Okay look, mami makes it no secret that she is having a hard time in the suburbs.

Every day she has to think of things to do and places to take me. The thing is we like being outside even when it's cold and we really, REALLY miss our parks in London. I think we went to every single one!

Every week, mami, tata and I (that's my grandfather) go to Washington, DC and explore something new. This week she sort of forgot, but because the day was so nice we decided to head out to Reagan National Airport and watch the planes take off from the park across the way.

I had never seen a plane take off, I've only been on them. And it was right about my head! Tata and I waved bye bye to all of them but we had to shout loud for everyone to hear.

We had some lunch then drove over to East Potomac Park where Haines Point is and I played on the playground.

So if you are a parent in the DC area and you are tired of the same old indoor areas, going to the mall, or staying indoors you should do what we do - plan a day in the city!

Your day can go like this:

Drive to the airport and park for free and watch the planes take off

You can walk on the path along the Potomac River, go for a bike ride or play ball

Then drive across the 14th Street bridge and head over to Haines Point in East Potomac Park

There is free parking and a cool playground and rest area. Have a nice lunch there and enjoy being by the water and see the boats go by.

There are no food stalls or stores, so come prepared. But if you bring friends or family it makes it more fun.

Enjoy being out of the 'burbs as mami says!

So go on, get out there and enjoy Washington, DC (or whatever city you are near)  because there is so much to do!

How to make Chilean alfajores

Yessss! After mami canceled our baking day because she wasn't feeling very good, we finally made the alfajores she had promised a few days ago.

Alfajores are cookies filled with dulce de leche/manjar or caramel. Every country in Latin America has them, but mami says this is the Chilean recipe and the best ones too! And being the good chileno that I am, I followed the recipe very carefully.

So here is what you need:

1/4 cup  and 3 tbsp of butter
1/4 cup and 3 tbsp and of sugar
3/4 cup and 3 tbsp of flour
Powdered sugar
1 egg
1 can of condensed milk or dulce de leche/manjar

You can go to any Latin food markets and buy the dulce de leche already made, or you can make your own at home.

To make the caramel you will need to take a can of condensed milk and place the entire unopened can in a large pan. Make sure the water covers the can. Then boil and simmer for two hours. This cooks the condensed milk and makes the manjar!

How to make the alfajor/cookie:

1. Mix together the butter and sugar making it creamy
2. Add the egg and flour
3. Mix all together
4. Take pieces in your hand and place on baking tray and lay them very thin making circles
5. We used a cookie cutter because I wanted to make hearts, but the traditional alfajor should be very thin, much thinner than regular cookies and ROUND
6. Bake at 325 degrees for 12 minutes or until edges get toasty and brown
7. Let cool
8. Then spread the manjar on one alfajor then cover - like a sandwich!
9. Use a strainer to shake powdered sugar on top
10. EAT! Disfruten! Enjoy!

So easy right? Mami doesn't make complicated things so this was perfect for us!

Now I'm going to EAT THEM ALL!

Trendy Toddler Tuesday: Week 8

Sorry for being so late! Mami isn't feeling very good and when she doesn't remind me to blog I sometimes forget.

Oh, and HAPPY LOVE DAY everyone! I had a party to go to but mami just couldn't get out of bed this morning. Papi took care of me, then after lunch she took me to get a haircut.

My tía Denise said I was starting to look like Justin Bieber, but I shouted out "No Justin Bieber!! I'm LITTLE M!" and after that they left me alone.

So this week, I'm showing off my new cut, still sort of long but not as long as before! Mami told the lady "no military cut". Yes ma'am she said and I sat very having my lollipop.

So there you have it, my new cut. I think I look the same, but now you can see my ears!

Now your turn! Show off your look...

No shopping mami!

I don't like  being tricked into going shopping with mami. She will ask me at home "want to go out with me?"

OF COURSE I'm going to say yes. Then we get in the car, she promises the playground or the park and then we end up at a STORE!

WHAT?? Mami you fooled me!

So this last time I had had enough, as soon as we opened the door to the shoe store I shouted out "No store mami. NO STORE!" Papi and mami looked at each other and mami said "Ok, let's be quick".

Yes, that's right. Please hurry up!

I really didn't want to go in there...but papi said he needed shoes and that he wouldn't take long.

So I waited....

And made mami chase after me...

And played....

Until mami was rushing papi and we left to the fish market in Washington DC.

That should teach them! And parents it's best not to take us shopping, please?

Trendy Toddler Tuesday: Week 7

I'm back at my grandma and grandpa's house and boy do I love it here! I get to explore in the woods, play at the HUGE playground and see Jenna who likes like a wolf, but mami says she's a dog.

Today was papi's birthday and I got to blow out the candles on his cake and open his gifts. I tore the wrapping paper right off and everyone was impressed at how quick the candles went out. I have lots and lots of wind!

But aside from that, the only other big news is that something strange has been happening lately. All of my trousers are getting shorter and my shirts don't cover my belly anymore. Mami said she has to go shopping for me because I've got nothing to wear. Even my underpants and pj's are getting a little tight. I don't know, I guess it's all that milk or all that juice I drink, but I'm getting SO BIG!

Having said that, I don't want to show you my short trousers or tight tops, so mami and I thought we would share with you my awesome....house slippers
Mami doesn't like me running around barefoot or with socks, so she got me these super cool slippers with a bulldozer on them. She really does know what I like! I look just like papi when he's relaxing at home. He has a pair too, but no bulldozer on his. Good thing, otherwise we wouldn't be able to tell them apart.

Mami says she wants to eat my legs. I sure hope she doesn't!

**Toddler Boy Slippers: Stride Rite from TJ Maxx for $6**

So how about you? Anything cool you want to show off? Of course you do!

Here's what you have to do: (we will choose our top three favorites in 3 weeks time)

I ate SUSHI!

This weekend my Oma invited us to have sushi. It sounds funny, but tastes yummy.

Mami said it RAW fish, but I think she was just making that up. There was lots of rice, crab meat, avocado and cucumber. Mami called them "rolls" and I dipped them in a special sauce. I tried using the eating sticks like papi did, but I still don't know how to use them very well. So instead I used the little umbrella stick and it worked perfect.

I couldn't stop eating them but then suddenly I felt very full and I told mami "my tummy hurts". Papi said the rice was expanding in my belly and that I shouldn't have anymore.

I don't know about you, but I really liked it. Mami and papi ate some other funny looking things, but they told me it was spicy so I couldn't have any.

I like trying new foods...sometimes they look strange but then turn out to be okay. I hope I get to eat sushi again!

What about you, do you like to try new foods? What have you tried lately?
